Book Description

bag lady
. . . is the inspiring story of one woman’s triumph over a life buffeted by adversity and a mind-boggling series of profound downers, any one of which would defeat most of us. Bag Lady is a metaphor for the physical and emotional “baggage” that encumbers every person’s life. It is a memoir that reads like page-turning fiction, but it is all true.

bag lady . . . is sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking. Story by story, you walk with the author as she slowly becomes aware that there is something seriously wrong going on inside her body.  The first signs show up during her growing-up years in Mexico and El Salvador.  They multiply during her high school and college years in Missouri and later during her marriage. Finally their meaning is made clear. She has ulcerative colitis, a relentless disease that puts her life on a physical and emotional roller coaster. Eventually, she will have to make a momentous decision: whether to continue limping through life as it is, or confront the reality of her condition and begin anew. Hers is the story of a Great Comeback from pain and sorrow to a life of success and joy.

bag lady . . .
chronicles how the author coped with ulcerative colitis before and after making the momentous decision to have an ileostomy and commit to wearing a plastic bag on her stomach for the rest of her life. Bag Lady speaks to the millions of victims of ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and colon cancer, and to the family and friends who live their illnesses with them. It is a book that defeats fear and lifts hope, that has valuable lessons for all of us on how to live a fulfilling life.

Bag lady is for all people with inflammatory bowel disease, for those coming to anostomy some day, and for people like myself, old ostomates, who need to rememberthe magic and grace that underscores our resurrections.

Richard Solly, Author of Journey Notes: Writing for Recovery

“I wanted you to know just how impressed I was with your book.  When I was finished, when I was explaining the ending of the story to my husband (I had been keeping him abreast as I went along) I was so moved by your father’s terrible death, and all you had gone through, that I just broke down crying.  You have given a wonderful gift to us all.  I would be delighted to have you to come to the (Nobel) conference and sign your books.”

“I heard you/met you at Excelsior Bay Books the other day. The next morning I walked back to the store and bought Bag Lady.  Started it and stayed with it and just finished it last night, in tears by the Epilogue.  Bag Lady ranks right up there with all the good books I’ve ever read.  And now I want to read some of your other ones.
